Changed old employee Username/Email now can't create Proxy email.

I changed an old user danielle@.com to angela@.com under Manage Users. The email works. I can send and receive both on the web and outlook. But when I try to create an Alias/Proxy email address attached to another user michael@.com using the old danielle@.com I get an error message. The proxy address "smtp:danielle@.com" is already being used by "danielle". Please choose another proxy address.

 

I am trying to create the proxy email under manage my organization.  I have done this before from a completely deleted email account.

 

I changed the user from danielle to angela so there is no danielle user anymore.  What am I doing wrong?
